The name “Somnath” is derived from two Sanskrit words — “Som” (Moon God) and “Nath” (Lord), meaning Lord of the Moon.

According to Hindu mythology, King Daksha had 27 daughters who were married to Chandra Dev (the Moon God). However, Chandra favored one wife, Rohini, over the others. Angered by this partiality, King Daksha cursed Chandra to lose his brightness and gradually fade away.
