The Thrill of River Rafting Is Returning to Rishikesh 🌊
There is exciting news for adventure-loving tourists planning to visit Rishikesh. River rafting in the Ganga River is expected to resume from September 23, 2026.
During the monsoon season, rafting activities in Rishikesh are suspended because of the increased water level and strong river currents. This year too, continuous rainfall prevented rafting activities from restarting at the usual time.
Following an inspection of the river conditions, preparations are now underway to restart rafting activities.
Ganga Water Level Found Suitable for Rafting
Before rafting operations can resume, different sections of the Ganga River are inspected for water level, flow and rapids.
During the inspection, the condition of a nearly 25-kilometre stretch from Marine Drive to Khara Srot in Muni Ki Reti was assessed. River conditions were evaluated using rafts and kayaks.
Following the inspection, the river conditions were found suitable for rafting. After the required permission is received, rafting operations are expected to begin from September 23.
Why Was Rafting Delayed This Year?
Usually, rafting activities in Rishikesh resume after the monsoon season. However, this year, continuous rainfall in the hill regions resulted in a high water level and strong flow in the Ganga.
Considering the safety of tourists in fast-flowing river sections, it was necessary to inspect the river conditions before restarting rafting activities.
This is why the start of the rafting season has been delayed this year.
Which Rafting Routes May Open?
Rafting routes may be opened in phases depending on the water level and river conditions.
The following routes may be among the first to reopen:
- Brahmapuri to Rishikesh
- Shivpuri to Rishikesh
If the river conditions remain favourable, longer rafting routes such as Marine Drive and Kaudiyala may also be opened gradually.
Rafting Will Boost Tourism in Rishikesh
River rafting is an important part of adventure tourism in Rishikesh. Once the rafting season begins, a large number of tourists are expected to visit the city.
The benefits are not limited to rafting operators. Local hotels, homestays, taxi drivers, guides, restaurants and other tourism businesses are also expected to benefit from the increase in tourist activity.
Rafting remains suspended during the monsoon season, which affects several local tourism businesses. The reopening of rafting activities is expected to bring renewed activity to the sector.
Important Things Tourists Should Know Before Visiting Rishikesh
If you are planning to visit Rishikesh for rafting in the final week of September, make sure to check the latest weather conditions, river water level and administrative guidelines before travelling.
The water level of the Ganga can change quickly due to rainfall. Therefore, do not plan your trip solely based on the announced rafting start date.
During rafting, always choose a registered and authorized operator and follow all safety instructions carefully.
Adventure Tourism Season Is Set to Return to Rishikesh
If permission is granted for rafting operations from September 23, adventure tourism activities in Rishikesh are expected to pick up again.
With fast-flowing rapids, exciting river sections and beautiful Himalayan surroundings, Rishikesh is expected to attract many tourists looking to experience the thrill of river rafting in the coming weeks.
If you are planning a trip to Rishikesh, Shivpuri, Marine Drive or Kaudiyala, make sure to check the latest weather and river conditions before starting your journey.
