Swami Haridas Ji was the guru of the famous musician Tansen, one of the nine gems in Emperor Akbar’s court.
According to legends, Swami Haridas Ji lived in Nidhivan, Vrindavan, where he would spend his days singing devotional songs in praise of Lord Krishna. His bhajans were so soulful that one day, Shri Radha and Krishna appeared before him in their divine form. Overwhelmed by this divine vision, Swami Haridas Ji requested them to manifest in a single idol form so that the world could experience their eternal love and beauty.
Obeying his wish, the divine couple merged into one form — the enchanting “Shri Banke Bihari Ji”, meaning “The Supreme Enchanter who is bent in three places” (tribhanga posture). The idol was later installed in Nidhivan and later moved to the present temple structure for public worship in 1864 AD.
