Gangotri is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in India, nestled in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand . Dedicated to Goddess Ganga, this revered dham marks the origin of the holy River Ganga, known as Bhagirathi at its source. As the second stop of the Char Dham Yatra, Gangotri sits at an altitude of around 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) above sea level, surrounded by the stunning snow-clad peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas, pine forests, and spiritual serenity.
The Gangotri Temple, constructed in the early 18th century by the Gorkha commander Amar Singh Thapa, stands proudly on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. Made of white granite, the temple houses the idol of Goddess Ganga, worshipped here as a life-giving and purifying force. Devotees believe that a dip in the icy waters of the Bhagirathi cleanses all sins and brings spiritual liberation.
A short trek from the temple takes you to Gaumukh, the actual glacier source of the Ganga River, located at an altitude of around 4,100 meters. Gaumukh means "Cow’s Mouth," as the glacier snout is believed to resemble a cow’s face. This trek is a spiritually invigorating and visually stunning experience through the Gangotri National Park.
According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath performed rigorous penance here to bring the celestial river Ganga down to Earth to purify the souls of his ancestors. Lord Shiva then received Ganga in his matted locks to soften her powerful descent, and from there, she gently flowed to the Earth as Bhagirathi.
A pilgrimage to Gangotri is more than just a journey—it's a soulful encounter with divinity and nature. With its sacred legends, serene surroundings, and the unyielding flow of the holy river, Gangotri offers a deeply moving experience that stays with pilgrims forever.
