🧘‍♂️ Gue Village – Home to India's Only Natural Mummy

Gue (pronounced “Goo-ay”) is a small, remote village in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, located close to the Indo-Tibet border. What makes this otherwise quiet village truly remarkable is its well-preserved 500-year-old naturally mummified monk, which attracts spiritual seekers, history lovers, and curious travelers alike.

🧭 Geographical Location

Gue lies at an altitude of about 10,500 feet (3,200 meters) above sea level, in the extreme eastern part of Spiti Valley, and is just 40 km from Tabo and around 20 km from the Indo-China border post. Due to its strategic location, the area is under Army surveillance, and visitors must often pass through checkpoints with valid ID.

🧍‍♂️ The Mystery of the Mummy

The most fascinating feature of Gue is the mummified body of a Buddhist monk, believed to be Sangha Tenzin, a lama from the 15th century. The mummy was discovered accidentally during a road construction project in the 1970s when a landslide revealed a tomb.

The most surprising fact is that the mummy is naturally preserved, without any chemicals or modern preservation techniques. It still has intact skin, teeth, and hair, which is astonishing after so many centuries.

🛕 Spiritual Belief and Local Reverence

Locals believe that the monk had sacrificed his life to save the village from scorpions, and since his mummification, no such creatures have been seen in the region. He is worshipped as a saint, and the mummy is kept in a glass case in a small monastery near the village, where devotees come to pray and pay respects.

🌄 Scenic Beauty

Apart from its mystical mummy, Gue offers breathtaking Himalayan views, traditional mud houses, and a peaceful setting surrounded by snow-capped peaks and barren mountains. Its isolation adds to its spiritual and meditative aura.

📍 How to Reach Gue

  • By Road: Gue is accessible by a detour from the Sumdo–Tabo route. A narrow road leads you uphill to Gue, and private vehicles or shared cabs from Tabo or Kaza are commonly used.
