Udaipur, famously known as the "City of Lakes," is one of the most culturally rich and historically significant cities of Rajasthan. Its history is rooted in valor, royal legacy, architectural brilliance, and the spirit of Rajputana pride. The city was founded in 1553 CE by the visionary ruler Maharana Udai Singh II, the 53rd ruler of the Mewar dynasty. Due to constant Mughal attacks and the strategic vulnerability of Chittorgarh, a safer capital was required. The region around Lake Pichola, surrounded by the Aravalli hills, was chosen for its natural defense and beauty.

According to legend, Maharana Udai Singh met a sage meditating on the hills near Pichola Lake, who blessed him and advised him to establish a new capital there. Inspired by this divine guidance, Udai Singh II laid the foundation of Udaipur, which soon became the heart of the Mewar Kingdom.

Udaipur’s history cannot be complete without mentioning Maharana Pratap, the legendary son of Udai Singh. His unwavering spirit, courage, and commitment to independence became a symbol of pride for Mewar. The famous Battle of Haldighati (1576) between Maharana Pratap and Mughal Emperor Akbar’s army remains one of the most important chapters of Rajput history.
